Sketchbook Practice

I have been thinking a lot lately about my art style and have started an almost daily sketchbook practice (I call it art play) where I can do whatever I like in a little A5 watercolour sketchbook. I’m hoping with regular art play I will develop a stronger sense of my art style and improve my drawing.

I always thought that any time spent doing art had to be productive, for a reason, or to create something I can use – these ideas have mostly come from my lack of time with a young child and feeling like I need to use all my free time super productively.

However I had a lightbulb moment after discovering and reading through the blog on Helen Wells website. She has made me realise that just creating for fun with no purpose actually is really important to developing your skills and style.

So here are a few of the recent pages showing my sketchbook practice – a real mix of collage, watercolour abstract doodling, and some more illustrative work. Enjoy!
