FAQs for surface pattern design licensing
What is licensing?
Licensing is basically borrowing or renting a design. A licence agreement allows you to use the design for a certain purpose, timeframe, and geographical area.
What products can I use a design on?
Pretty much anything that can be printed on – fabric, stationary, wall paper, packaging. Pattern designs can also be used for website graphics, promotional materials, or art projects (such as the background for an artwork).
What if I just need fabric?
You can buy quite a few of my surface pattern designs on a range of fabrics and yes, you can sell the products you make with this fabric. As a designer, I earn a small commission for each metre of fabric sold from the fabric store. Check out my fabric shop page for all the stores you can purchase fabric from.
How do I license a design?
First you choose which design or designs you want. Then let me know what the pattern design will be used for (i.e. the industry), how long you want to licence it for, what type of licence (exclusive or non-exclusive), and what geographical area it will be used in. Once we have agreed on a price, I will send you a licence agreement and payment details. As soon as you have paid, I will send you the pattern design file.
What type of file do I receive?
All the surface pattern designs are provided in seamless JPG files, or layered PSD files if required. If you need another file type just let me know.
What is a non-exclusive licence?
Non-exclusive means that more than one person/company can use that design at the same time. For example, you own a fashion label and want to licence a design for dresses. If you choose a non-exclusive licence, another dress company may also licence the same design at the same time.
What is an exclusive licence?
An exclusive licence means that you are the only person/company that can use that design in your industry for the period of the licence. For example, you have an exclusive licence for a design for two years and you will use that design for swimwear. That design cannot be licenced to another swimwear company during that two years, but it could be licenced to a wallpaper company for example.
What is a buyout?
A buyout means that you are buying a pattern design for you – and only you – to use for as long as you like. The design cannot be licenced to anyone else ever.
How much does it cost to licence a pattern design?
This depends on the complexity of the pattern design, the licence period, the geographical coverage, and the industry you want to licence for. Just contact me for my pricing list.
How long does a licence go for?
Generally I licence my designs for two years – however this can be a shorter or longer period depending on your circumstances.
Who owns the copyright to the pattern?
Copyright and ownership of the surface pattern design and the elements within the design always remain with myself, Anna Markula.
Where can I see your available patterns?

Are the designs seamless surface pattern designs?
Yes all the surface pattern designs you see are ready-to-go seamless repeats.
Can I change the scale or colour?
Ofcourse – I can resize the design so that the motifs are the size you would like. I can also make minor colour adjustments – for any more involved changes there is an additional hourly rate.
Can I see what the design looks like on a product first?
Yes! I want to make sure you are 100% happy that the design will be perfect for you and your product. I can provide a mockup of the design so you can get a better idea of what it should look like, this can also be really useful when figuring out the scale of the motifs.
What is the difference between a custom design and licencing a design?
When you licence a design, you choose an existing pattern from my print library. When you decide to get a custom surface pattern design, you have complete input into the pattern design. Because it is made specifically for you, you can keep and use the design forever. It cannot be licenced to anyone else.
Who owns the copyright to the custom pattern design?
Copyright and ownership of the surface pattern design and the elements within the design always remain with myself, Anna Markula.
How long can I use the custom pattern design for?
FOREVER!
Can I get art process and behind-the-scenes content?
Yes definitely – I can record the artwork being created and also take still imagery that can be used for your social media, website, newsletter etc. Telling the story behind the art is a fantastic way of engaging with your customers and creating interest in a new design.
