FAQs for surface pattern design licensing

Licensing is basically renting a design. A licence agreement allows you to use a pattern design for a certain purpose, timeframe, and geographical area, while I retain ownership of the artwork.

What products can I use a design on?

Licensed patterns can be used across a wide range of products including swimwear, apparel, accessories, stationary, wallpaper, packaging, and homewares. Pattern designs can also be used for digital applications such as website graphics or promotional materials.

What if I only need fabric?

How do I license a design?

Once you’ve chosen a design, I’ll ask a few questions about:

What type of file do I receive?

Patterns are supplied as seamless high resolution JPG files. Layered PSD files or alternative formats can be provided if needed – just let me know.

What is a non-exclusive licence?

Non-exclusive means that the same design may be licensed to more than one client at the same time. For example, you own a fashion label and want to licence a design for dresses. If you choose a non-exclusive licence, another dress company may also licence the same design at the same time.

What is an exclusive licence?

An exclusive licence means that you are the only brand within your industry permitted to use that design for the duration of the licence.

For example, a swimwear-exclusive licence would prevent the design being licensed to another swimwear brand during that period, but it could still be licensed in a different industry.

What is a buyout?

A buyout means you purchase the pattern outright for unlimited use. The design will never be licensed to anyone else.

How much does it cost to licence a pattern design?

Pricing depends of factors such as:

Please get in touch for a tailored quote.

How long does a licence last?

Are the designs seamless repeats?

Yes – all surface pattern designs are professionally created seamless repeats, ready for production.

Yes – minor colour and scale adjustments are included. More complex changes can be quoted at an additional hourly rate.

Can I see what the design on a product before licensing?

I occasionally share new pattern designs and availability with brands via email.
