Happy Easter!

Instead of baby rabbits and little chicks, I thought I’d share some photos of newly hatched Olive Ridley turtles!

These photos were taken last summer in Ghana, which has many long sandy beaches which are ideal turtle nesting grounds. Unfortunately however the eggs are often eaten by locals or the sand is used to make concrete. It is an ongoing battle to make sure the nesting turtles have a chance of survival. I was lucky enough to meet one of the researchers working here and help out for a couple of days, walking the beaches looking for new nests, moving some leatherback turtle eggs to a safer location, and assisting with the newly hatched turtles. If you are interested in the fantastic work that is being done in Ghana, check out the Bahari Karuna project.
